The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) learning standards serve as a guide to help shape and assist the school librarian foster the learning of their students. In Literacy Leadership and the School Library, Achterman suggests, " Literacy is a cornerstone of lifelong learning and at the core of a school library program's mission. Literacy leadership is still very much about doing all the things within the school librarian's range of influence to help students read, read more, read better, and read for a lifetime".
The school library media specialist serves in many capacities: leader, instructional partner, information specialist and teacher. In order to be effective in your role as school library media specialist, you must have influence.
Effective School Library Programs

The librarian would serve as an instructional leader and teacher, support the development of digital, participatory & inquiry learning, technology and information literacies, as well as reinforce literacy through guidance and reading initiatives. Provide access to resources and technology that assist with connecting classroom lessons to real-life events and
Deliver a well-rounded educational program (AASL, 2009) that dwells on accessing and evaluating information, administering digital learning training experiences, and creating a culture of reading.
